Palmer’s hosts biggest Twoonie Apres ever??

Monday, June 7th, 2010

What a turn out! Sunny skies greeted Whistler’s Mountain bikers on Thursday June 3rd at the weekly Cross Country Mountain Bike race dubbed “Twoonie Race” $2 gets you a great marshaled race course, dinner and couple of beers and prizes. The Whistler Golf Club was proud to share sponsorship with Summit Sports this year and Palmer’s Gallery Bar and Grill once again was the stage for a great race Apres.

The course took us up the bike park- yes up the bike park- to start. Although we rode up ‘Easy Does it” there was nothing easy about it. After a 25 minute straight up grunt we loosend up the shocks, dropped the seats and headed down “the Angry Pirate.” Greasy and mean just like a pirate; this trail was a blast. From there we climbed “up” B line.  10 or so switch backs and a near jammer later we got the wave to head “down”- yeah! “Crank it Up” was fast and smooth and big air was had by all- okay not all, but it was awesome.

349 riders then headed to Palmer’s Gallery Bar and Grill at the Whistler Golf Club. Brother Twang had the tunes going, Head Chef Kevin Gosselin pounded out the Lasagna and salad and the servers poured draft as fast as they could to very thirsty riders. Ryan and Ian from Summit had great prizes to giveaway and the Whistler Golf Club chipped in with some golf to cap of a great evening of riding and Apres. Brother Twang kept the party going until another successful Twoonie Night was in the books.

Thanks to Summit Sports for a great race and to Adrian and the Palmer’s Gallery team for a great Apres.

Maintenance Days- June 2nd and 3rd

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Well it was a big couple of days for our Maintenance crew as they pulled off their Spring greens maintenance without a hitch! The weather was dodgy but they got creative and managed to get all our green maintenance done. Here’s how it went:

First Andy aerated the greens with small tynes. These tynes are very small but will relieve compaction and improve long term health

Next time to pick up the cores. Nice work boys!

Next Super Dave hit the greens with the verticutter. Verticutting removes thatch and takes out the high spots on the greens to provide a smoother roll. Dave did this in two directions which takes a LONG time.

Next the greens were topdressed lightly with sand to fill in the aeration holes and smooth out the putting surface. First Wayne fills up the top dresser with sand:

Then Mike uses the spreader to, you guessed it, spread sand!

From their the sand gets dragged matted into the holes:

Next its time to get some grass growing. Chris overseeded all the thin areas of the greens with bent grass:

Lastly time for a little dinner. Fertilizer is then applied to the greens:

Time to cut a hole in the greens and get ready for regular cutting:

The final cut and away we go! Nice work team. All that in 8 hours.

BEAR ACTIVITY ON COURSE CONTINUES!

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Wow what a start to bear season! The golf course has been frequented daily by bears who have come down from the mountain in search for food. With the second snowiest season on record on the mountains their isn’t a lot of food for the bears up top so down to the valley they come!

The Whistler Golf Club has created “naturalized” zones on the golf course. These areas are not maintained and result in fescue grasses and dandelions which the bears love this time of year. They would prefer the berries that grow on the course but its too early in the year for berries so they graze away on course. The nice thing about our course is there is a lot of tree islands they can graze beside and take cover whenever golfers approach.

The staff have nicknamed the bears that frequent here the most. “Big Boy” is well… big. He has caused a few golfers to leave their PROV1 in the rough. “Jeannie” is Whistler’s most famous bear. No cubs this year which is rare for her but she has been dropping by the clinics nightly to graze on dandelions and watch the golfers in action. “Tiny” is a small yearling that just showed up this week. He likes the dandelion patch behind 17 green.

Our bear proof bins are critical to keeping the bears in their natural habitat and eating patterns. As long as the bears are on course eating their natural food we have had no issues. For more information on Whistler’s bear population visit www.getbearsmart.com
