Well now what do we do! I don’t think anyone can possibly describe the last three weeks unless you lived through it. Our town of Whistler was a star. Guests from around the world commented on what a great place this is. The pedestrian village was packed nightly and the atmosphere was incredible. The much debated Medals Plaza was also as star. Guest flocked there nightly to see the medals being presented and to listen to some of their favorite bands. Hilights for me in no particular order:
- “the blue coats” The volunteers were unbelievable. The represented all Canadians , well, like Canadians! Friendly, courteous and upbeat.
- the Athletes Village. It was an honour to be the Co- Mayor of the Village. The Village itself in the words of the athletes was “the best ever” at a winter Olympics.
- Whistler Village. Designed to be a pedestrian village people hit the streets on foot and the town flourished. The live sites were incredible and guests were free to walk the streets showing their colours and boy did they ever.
- The weather- tough start- what a finish.
- The venues. Finished early, looked amazing and were sold out.
- Jon Montgomery. It doesn’t get more Canadian than an golf medal winner walking through a packed village square chugging beer from a pitcher with a police escort!
- Sliding events. Tragedy on day one followed by the most exciting venue and races of the games where 4 heat race results were measured in the one hundredths of a second.
- Kids. What an education for the children of Whistler. They embraced it all.
- The Torch Relay. The single greatest event in Canada ever? It was an honour to carry it.
- The results. Record breaking medal count. Way to go Canada.
- “Sidney Crosby, the Golden Goal!” To be there for that was unbelievable.
- Ashley McIvor. “Dad do you know Ashley McIvor went to our school?”- that sums it all up right there.
- Jasey Jay Anderson- The gold he deserved
- The Womens Downhill. Not for the faint of heart- what a race.
- The RCMP. Polite, welcoming and friendly. They did us proud.
Way to go Canada. Everyone. We showed the world who we are.
