THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THE DOWNHILL

It was great to see perfect weather in Whistler for the Men’s and Women’s downhill races this week. Having moved here in 1991 I definitely took the World Cup downhill races for granted until they were cancelled of the circuit a few years ago. Standing in the general admission section at the finish line this week was a flat out riot. The Swiss fans with their giant cowbells absolutely hammered by 10am, the French fans with their full on brass band, the Canadians in their sea of red, the US fans and their “USA, USA” chants- what a great atmosphere.

After watching the Women’s downhill with my girls today I hope they want to ski again! A nasty, hard course with lots of technical air led to many crashes but in the end the course delivered the best skiers to the top of the podium. Whistler’s very own Britt Janyk skied great and finished 6th. There is no question Whistler Mountain offers two of the best downhills in the world and it was only matched by the awesome venue and crowds from around the world.

There were some nasty crashes in the Women’s downhill. This was recorded live. Too bad for the skier from Sweden. She was making a run for the podium before distaster struck.

Great day at the Luge yesterday as well. As Jerry Seinfeld said, “the Luge is like the Bobsled except there is no sled, its just Bob! One man sliding down a hill hanging on for dear life!” Another amazing venue.
